Believe it or not, it's actually Autumn

Autumn is upon us but you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise!
While it is unseasonally warm, the leaves are certainly starting to fall. I know this to be so because we're clearing a great many of them from people's spouting!
Autumn is a wonderful time of year to get your spouting under control and your roof treated. Doing both jobs as a single project right now makes a lot of sense; for one thing, winter rain will be able to run efficiently through the spouting and for another, the same rain will clean up the roof gently once the treatment has done its good work on the lichen and algae.
We love autumn here at GA - it's a beautiful time of year and it's a great season to get things nicely organised before the winter comes.

We sure hope everyone is having a great holiday so far.
Going back to work is officially a voluntary act this year but because of our sense of duty, Wednesday the 3rd will be our day to rejoin the great game of life. For now.

The weather outside is frightful, but your house can still look delightful...
Okay, the rhyming is worse than the weather - I'll give you that one. But that doesn't make the message any less true!

Aahhh Spring....

Spring is here at long last and isn't it great to see the weather improve as we transition to the warmer months?
Oh, actually no, on reflection I think it may have gotten a little worse since winter...
But the rain and wind won't last, and in contrast to Westeros, Summer is coming!!
Now is a great time to start planning ahead for summer and what needs to be achieved before the great annual migration outside begins.
For starters, there's a lot of winter clinging to houses out there. This winter has been warm and wet and that means anything that will stand still for long enough has gone either green, or black, or both.
To have a thorough de-wintering of your home, you want to consider the following points:
1) a house wash to clean off the algae and mould and also so you can see out the windows.
2) a roof treatment to clear the algae and to remind the lichen it's an unwelcome overstayer up there.
3) a general tidy up of the paved and masonry surfaces so you don't feel as though you're going to end up flat against them when they're wet and slippery after rain.
4) a thorough pest control so when the sun comes out (eventually), the flies know to look elsewhere for a safe place to proliferate this summer.

Look at what emerged from the fog on a classic Waikato winter's day!
It's one thing to verbally describe how well we do our job but every now and then, a pictorial is the only real way to do it justice.
This was a great outcome and we're really proud of how well we managed to wash this home. The difference between the 'before' image and the 'after' image is untouched, unedited and unmistakeable.
We're really good at what we do and what's more, we're incredibly gentle in the way we do it.

The spouting party continues!

If I were to summarise the past few weeks in a word, that word would be 'spouting'!
My oh my, how we've cleared some spouting this season. In fact spouting clearing has been so prevalent, it's crossed from being a noun to a verb: "what's happening today Craig?" "spouting".
But this is a good thing. Clearing your spouting is probably the most fundamental piece of home maintenance there is to be done. Nice, clear, efficiently running spouting is what keeps the water running away down the downpipes and not back into the roof cavity of your home. Believe me, it happens. In fact I saw it just yesterday.
This picture is what we found earlier in the week. This is a relatively clear section too. We found:

silver birch
london plane
cotoneaster
stock
privet
thistles
gorse (!!)
and various grasses

all growing in harmony in the same run of spouting. Arguably a nice woodland scene but probably better suited to another location than a run of residential spouting.

It's that time of year when the bugs are looking for somewhere warm and dry to lay up for winter.

The main hatch of exterior spiders has finished so the whitetails are coming inside to hunt the daddy-longlegs.
Cockroach fact: an adult cockroach can squeeze through a gap the thickness of four sheets of A4 copier paper. You don't need much of a gap for them to find their way in and start dropping egg cases around your home.

Winter washing continued....

House washing and building washing in winter is a special kind of job. Character building is probably the best way or representing the overall vibe.
It's not officially winter yet but this week has been a very accurate preview of how it's likely to look after we pass the starting gun on June the 1st.
Watching one's soapy solution literally freezing to a wall as it's applied at 0600 on a sub-zero morning gives one reason to pause and consider the wisdom of getting up early to go outside and get wet.
But the wonderful outcome of such madness in -3 of frost is that we made a particularly gungey commercial premises look like new again before trading started for the day.
To anyone who has any questions in their mind about washing a house or building in the colder months, please accept my assurance that the cold weather makes not a shred of difference to the efficacy of the process and this week has provided scientific proof of that assertion. Yes, the operator gets cold but that's going to happen anyway! And besides, hot drinks and pies are a cold weather cure all for we hardy souls at GA.

Going under in a sea of green...

Disclaimer: I should've waited until my 5 year old came home from school to provide a slightly more accurate representation of a house under water...

Hamilton, Auckland and their surrounds are disappearing under a sea of green algae. There are houses that desperately need washing all the way from Orewa to Otorohanga.
It's incredible how quickly it's happened actually - the algae has really taken hold and bloomed just in the last month.
Algae is funny stuff and I won't speculate what's prompted the invasion other than to say something clearly suits it climatically. Much more so than this time last year, that's for sure.
If you have green patches, it's worth washing it away now. My honest advice is to not wait until spring or summer - be rid of it now. Why? I hear you ask: because algae and its good friend mould have a habit of waiting in a nascent form in your cladding and when you suddenly become aware of it visually, you're really just seeing the icing on the cake. Or the tip of the iceberg, if we're to stick with the oceanic analogy.
Algae and mould will wash away really well when they first appear and because we're thorough, we make sure you have no spores remaining that will seek to recolonise your freshly washed home. So in summary, if you wash away the green now, you don't need to worry yourself that it will come back over the course of winter and mar the finish of your home when spring comes.
Algae and mould both like to pretend they're a harmless, sludgy substance that just hang around for a while until they find something better to do with their time, but in reality, they'll both pit your paint if left to proliferate.
It's so easy to wash it away before it gets traction and now is definitely the right time to do it.
Wash your house clean of mould and algae. It's a great feeling having a clean house, you're doing your paint a huge favour, and you'll be saved from further appalling pieces of line art from yours truly.
